Should I get an iPhone? December 3, 2007

I’ve never been one of those people who has to have the latest of gadgets, so when it comes time to really decide which one to buy, I get hopelessly confused. My hubby got a Blackberry Pearl a few months back and is really happy with it, but I wanted to give the iPhone a try. The problem was that I needed to find a worthwhile review such as this iPhone review from Engadget or another iPhone review from Gizmodo to figure out if I wanted one for myself or not. Finding stuff like that on the internet is not the hardest thing in the world, and I came up with the answer pretty quickly.

The Apple iPhone release has been the most anticipated one in recent times and the lines that I saw in the paper for buying a new iPhone were ridiculously long. Thankfully, I am happy enough to get my gadget fix at a later time and now that time has come. Having read about the iPhone, I would like to visit a showroom and try it out in person myself. There is a showroom nearby in town, and I think we will be going there and checking it out in person this weekend.

What antivirus to use? October 31, 2007

My anti virus software expired a while ago and I never got around to extending the service period. I have been using McAfee for the psst few years and Norton before that, but decided to go with Grisoft’s AVG anti virus this time, since I have heard a lot of good stuff about them from software professionals. When it comes to anti virus software systems, the cost of the software is not always proportional to the service, so don’t get sidetracked by the marketing gimmicks of the larger companies, who charge a whole lot more than the smaller companies, while still offering the same protection. If you take AVG’s basic subscription it is free, which means that you will get the updates a few days later than the paying customers, but all else is same. Their anti virus software is known to be one of the best in the industry, so I’m giving them a shot this time. For all your download needs, check out the amazing downloads at Download.com where you can find anything and everything for your computer.

Securing one’s work October 26, 2007

Now that I’m back and will start working again soon, I’m seriously thinking of upgrading my entire system and procedure of how I work. It is essential to keep up with technology these days and as a freelance writer it is absolutely essential to provide a secure environment with options of a Data Encryption Software at hand, which will ensure that my work remains completely safe no matter from where I am working.

A lot of my clients are extremely specific about how they want their work done and especially about what happens to the work once I have submitted it to them already. It just makes sense to get the best protection for data encryption and not have to worry about it at all at a later time. I’ve been checking around for such options and it seems to be a bit confusing with the amount of range that is available for securing one’s work.

According to a study by JuxtConsult, 10.8 million of 43% of the country’s online population are purchasing products online. The survey also shows that 59% of all Indians use the internet from their homes, of which 77% are connected via broadband connections. It is the widespread use of broadband that is making this sector grow. Considering the number of people who still don’t have internet connections or use slower connections, the potential for growth is enormous. The most popular activity online was of course the purchase of travel related items, such as airline tickets and hotel rentals.

As point of sale systems go, Vision Point of Sale systems are the best in the industry, and as someone who has been in the retail industry for over 15 years, I do know all about them. Vision Point of Sale is based in Glenview, Illinois and started up in 1993, becoming the best known POS provider for its all-round product capabilities, for purchase and maintainence of POS systems. The company has even been named by Deloitte & Touche as one of “Technology Fast 50″ companies for the past four years.

What I really like about Vision POS is the variety of products such as its IBM point of sale, which is one of the very best in the industry and a favorite of a lot o retailers. Using the very latest technologies, Vision only deals with the very best and is also the authorized dealer for Fujitsu, IBM and NCR. The company has recently seen a rising demand for service and maintenance on POS systems, especially for the three big brands of Fujitsu, IBM and NCR. It has been estimated that more than 60% of retailers use refurbished POS systems to reduce their costs as well as cut down on wastage and keep old POS systems out of landfills, and Vision is helping retailers do exactly that.

Security Vs privacy May 18, 2007

Since I work from home, I’ve not had to face this problem but a lot of computers at many offices are installed with a keystroke software that records all keystrokes that are typed on it. Everything from passwords, chat conversations email etc are recorded. Thankfully I don’t have to deal with this keystroke logger system, as I do my personal and professional work from the same laptop. It will probably be a good idea to get another laptop, just for work in the future.

It is a hotly debated subject and both employers and employees have valid points, the most important being a compromise of a company’s security and an invasion of privacy of employees. Maybe, companies should add some time out periods or have separate computers that are not being monitored where employees could check their email and do other personal stuff. Not sure how many would go for it, but it’s definitely worth thinking about.

One of the most fun things to shop for lately has been cell phones. With the variety and features that cell phones have, it is a lot of fun to find one that is perfect for what you are looking for. I have traditionally used Nokia cell phones and have become quite used to their menus and options. Lately it seems that Nokia is lagging behind other cell phone companies in terms of style as well as functionality and so to find the best deals on cell phones I looked up the most popular site for cell phone deals at Wirefly on eBay.

The Motorola phones seem to be the best bet and at Wirefly you can get some really great deals on Motorola phones when you sign up for a wireless account. The many variations of Motorola RAZR for example are all winners in terms of style as well as usability. After all, you are going to be using your phone on a daily basis, so might as well get something that is great to look at but will not cost the earth. At Wirefly, you will be able to find the perfect match. So go and have a look as some of the great deals on cell phones at Wirefly on eBay.

The Economic Times reports that Wal-Mart and Target have both shown interest in a new retail technological product being developed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The new product is a Personal Shopping Assistant (PSA) and is currently being tested out at the TCS retail innovation lab, with a likely rollout occurring sometime next year. K Ananth Krishnan, Chief Technology Officer at TCS, said that “TCS has worked with some of the largest retailers, including 30 of the 50 largest in the world, and retail contributes more than $200 million in revenues for the company.”

The PSA will be a scanning device with a LCD screen that is mounted on a regular shopping cart. Upon scanning the customer’s loyalty card, the screen will guide customers to special offers and discounts available in the store. Customer’s can also pay via this product as it recognizes bar codes and RFID tags.

On ads: good vs evil October 13, 2006

I wrote about the reach of advertisements in almost every sphere in our lives in an earlier post, and thought the tone might have been too negative. While on a personal level, it can get overwhelming to be faced with ‘names’ and ‘brands’ where ever you look, from the innovative and creative point of view, it definately is a thrill to see how the process is changing along with our lives, technology and modern modes of communication.

Advertisements on supermarket converyor belts, coupons or ads on your cell phone, ads inside elevators are all new areas can’t only be seen as irritants but rather as innovative means of reaching customers, making products more accessable and relating practically to how we really live today.

Depending too much on technology October 2, 2006

In my last post, I wrote about crossing the limits of privacy by using technological innovations. But what happens when one gets dependant on these technologies, is it considered all right for them to be invasive then?

I spent almost all day yesterday pacing back and forth from my desk to the window, to the kitchen, to the living room, just about everywhere…Why? My Internet wasn’t working and I had to keep checking every few minutes to see if it had come back on. I think I have crossed the line by requiring the Internet to be working whether I use it or not as generally on a Sunday, I don’t spend more than an hour online. But just because it wasn’t working, I wanted to work on it.

So, I’m back to the question in my last post? Who sets the limit?
