What antivirus to use? October 31, 2007

My anti virus software expired a while ago and I never got around to extending the service period. I have been using McAfee for the psst few years and Norton before that, but decided to go with Grisoft’s AVG anti virus this time, since I have heard a lot of good stuff about them from software professionals. When it comes to anti virus software systems, the cost of the software is not always proportional to the service, so don’t get sidetracked by the marketing gimmicks of the larger companies, who charge a whole lot more than the smaller companies, while still offering the same protection. If you take AVG’s basic subscription it is free, which means that you will get the updates a few days later than the paying customers, but all else is same. Their anti virus software is known to be one of the best in the industry, so I’m giving them a shot this time. For all your download needs, check out the amazing downloads at Download.com where you can find anything and everything for your computer.
Managing membership data October 31, 2007

I was recently invited to join a not-for-profit organization that helps involve kids and patients with outdoor activities. It is a relatively new set up and is currently still actively building itself and its membership, but is very forward thinking already. I was very impressed with the fact that they had already taken up a membership management software which will be equipped to take care of all their members.
It just shows that the organization is completely clued in to adapting to technology and how to keep things moving as simple as possible. A lot of organizations, especially not-for-profit organizations, completely ignore this facet of business management, but end up far worse than if they had investing some money into managing such systems. I’m hoping to become part of this organization as it is a wonderful collection of individuals who are excited to be contributing and helping others.
Missing items in Ikea packages October 31, 2007

Considering how much I love Ikea stuff, yesterday was the first time I actually assembled something from the store. I’ve put together smaller items from the store before, things that did not require any tools and just clicked into place itself, but yesterday we put together a set of Klubbo nested tables and the Mikael drawer unit. The Klubbo nested tables had 4 screws missing, so I need to get hold of them and the Mikael drawer unit had a warped drawer rail which is making the bottom drawer jam.
We had got a Mikael desk earlier that was assembled by Ikea people and there were several missing screws as well as a piece that was facing the wrong direction and needed to be ordered again. It eventually took 3 weeks for them to come and fix it again. It seems that this happens quite a bit and is something that I had not expected or anticipated from Ikea at all. I do hope our future experiences with Ikea items will be smoother.
Securing one’s work October 26, 2007

Now that I’m back and will start working again soon, I’m seriously thinking of upgrading my entire system and procedure of how I work. It is essential to keep up with technology these days and as a freelance writer it is absolutely essential to provide a secure environment with options of a Data Encryption Software at hand, which will ensure that my work remains completely safe no matter from where I am working.
A lot of my clients are extremely specific about how they want their work done and especially about what happens to the work once I have submitted it to them already. It just makes sense to get the best protection for data encryption and not have to worry about it at all at a later time. I’ve been checking around for such options and it seems to be a bit confusing with the amount of range that is available for securing one’s work.
Back home now! October 26, 2007

So, I’m finally back home in Dubai after a wonderfully hectic trip back to India. The wedding was simply wonderful, definitely the most fun wedding that I have ever attended and it was really great to catch up with everyone there. I can’t believe I was away for over 3 weeks, when I was initially only going to go for a quick and short trip, but then it turned out to be a nice, hectic vacation. Not much relaxation, but still a really great trip, and I’m now wondering when I’ll be able to go again for such a trip. It does feel great to be back home, and I’m going to take a bit of time to settle in, before starting off work again, probably a week or so. Let’s see how it goes.
Searching for local jobs October 20, 2007

The key to being able to settle into a new home and new city is to be able to find the right help. Having access to a local job search is really the way to creating a comfort zone around yourself and taking care of all the innumerable daily requirements of running a home or business. Moving to a new city and country is no easy task and to find a new job in your new location can be quite a daunting task. The one place I usually head for are the local job search engines, where you can get a good idea of the local jobs.
Since we’ve been moving every couple of years, I have realized the importance of having a backup of such services as it really is what makes all the difference in settling in comfortably and struggling to make a home. Job searches have radically changed in the past few years and has become so much simpler and accessable, no matter where in the world you might be located. It will interesting to note how the industry changes with time, as it is one of the fastest evolving sectors, which combined with technology has carved a totally new niche for itself.
Writing on retail October 20, 2007

As a retail writer, I’ve been following the retail industry for several years now and it seems that there has never been a better and more dynamic time for the changes that have been taking place. Consumers are no longer wary of the modern retail format and are eagerly awaiting new store openings and being able to shop in a more pleasant atmosphere. The recent problems that have cropped up are political and should have no place in the retail sector. In any free market economy, consumers and producers have a choice of selecting their choice of products and prices. As long as the middle men try to control the market, the retail industry will never be able to grow at anywhere near the pace it deserves to grow. It is certainly an interesting time to watch and track the happenings of the industry but also a worrying time, hoping that things continue to move on an upward swing.
Conducting business overseas October 18, 2007

Almost all kind of work these days involves some amount of global business and more and more companies are preferring to go in for TANDBERG Video Conferencing Systems rather than actual travel for meetings. When it is avoidable, it just makes more sense to use the highly advanced technology of these video conferencing systems, which give professional lots of options on how to conduct meetings with clients and associates no matter where they are located.
Air travel for business has already decreased in the past few years, although there are a lot more new businesses around now. With the rise of terrorism and air travel being one of the strongest targets, the use of video conferencing has made it a lot easier to conduct business no matter where in the world you or your clients are located. The systems are so advanced that it offers an as good as you are there kind of atmosphere, making it a much more realistic experience than ever before.

It’s been simply ages since I last posted here, over a month in fact. It has been a rather hectic time and one that I have alternately enjoyed as well as wished that it would go by quickly. It has been a productive time though and I have made a lot of headway on several aspects of work and home life. Not really sure, how often I will be able to continue to post here, but will try to post something interesting here every once in a while.
